San Diego's 9 Best Sandwiches - 2014

mosaic-image

Rubicon Deli has tons of options but when it comes to the “Dapper Dipper,” there's no contest. A half a pound of thinly sliced prime rib is layered onto the bread of your choice - choose the garlic cheese bread - and slathered with enough horseradish for a nose-clearing bite. The accompanying au jus is so good, you may be tempted to take a few sips...

The sandwich snobs of Rubicon Deli

mosaic-image

A loud-mouthed regular was in front of me at the counter, raving to his friend about the best sandwich in San Diego—the Dapper Dipper. Piles of sliced prime rib, he said, are tender and juicy after a plunge in au jus—melted, stringy cheese and a slathering of horseradish mayo completing the deal...

When a place makes its own bread in-house, you can bet its sandwich game is on point. They offer several must-have varieties, but "The Belly Up" rocks just as hard as its namesake and is full of slow-roasted pork belly, sweet & spicy coleslaw, lettuce, and miso-ginger mayo. REVIEW: The Rubicon Deli - Mission Beach California

mosaic-image

Overall, our Rubicon Deli experience in Mission beach exceeded our expectations. It had a great beach atmosphere, a very clean and modern design and the Dom Pastram sandwich was amazing. The service was fast, welcoming and very friendly. If you’re in the Pacific Beach or Mission Beach area The Rubicon Deli is definitely worth a visit! - See more at: http://www.foodsmackdown.com/2011/06/the-rubicon-deli-mission-beach-california/#sthash.Vq33OePP.dpuf

At Rubicon Deli, it’s all in the details

Whole sandwiches will fill up any post-surf or boardwalk-jog-emptied stomach. The fresh bread, especially the ones with cheese and seasonings, add a lot to the sandwiches’ flavor and are a welcome departure from the abrasive, tough breads served as an afterthought at some other sandwich spots. After sampling many Rubicon sandwiches, from vegetarian behemoths to towers of turkey and pastrami, the “Spicy Tuna,” with pepper jack, avocado, pepperoncinis and habanero mustard, was my favorite. It had a nice kick uncommon to most tuna sandwiches, and combined well with the garlic cheese bread.

Rubicon Deli creates a selection of gourmet sandwiches

You might want to add a little fire to your dining experience by adding one of the deli’s Napa Valley mustards: hot and sweet honey, green chile and garlic, herbs of the valley, habañero or Inglehoffer cranberry mustard.

While on occasion local celebrities have been spotted at the deli, the shop mainly caters to local residents and families.

If I was a 22 year old surfer guy, I could probably do justice to the size of this thing. I saw more than one young man busily chowing down. Pretty decent deal overall. Plus, I didn't have to cook breakfast this morning.
